Tuesday is ‘Take Your Teddy Bear To Work Day’
By Beth Sinden
Stop the presses! Tuesday, Oct. 11 is “Take Your Teddy Bear To Work Day”.
At this time of dark problems roiling over us, I believe that it’s high time for this day of celebration.
One website suggested that if the day comes on a Saturday, just cuddle up with your teddy bear in your jammies all day. That sounds great to me. I could use a day (or 10) in bed with a book and a teddy bear.
Sometimes I would like to take off my editorial assistant hat, my grandma and mom hats, my wife hat, my serious, painfully aging hat, my actor’s hat, my dutiful daughter’s hat and just put on a cute little bonnet for eating warm jello while laying in a hammock.
There is a time for seriousness in life. There’s nothing new there; and I can do that. But there is also a time to be silly, to rest, to let someone else answer the hard questions. There’s a time to carry your well-loved teddy bear around with you, feed it cookies and tea and let it comfort you. I can do all that too. Yeah, I’m really looking forward to “Take Your Teddy Bear To Work Day” next Tuesday.
My teddy’s name is Frederick, named after a character in a play. He was compassionate, kind, funny and tried to help an unfortunate stranger. Frederick is like that too, without saying a word. He rode in the car with me for so long he’s a different color on one side from a sunburn. He also shares the same name as a favorite uncle.
Frederick’s home has been in my closet for a couple years, since moving back to Galion. When I get home tonight I will rescue him from that closet. I may bundle us up and sit on the front porch swing in the dark and tell him about my day. He won’t say much, but he’s a good listener.
